It is like a medium-sized cat, weighing 11 kg and 70 cm long. Ocelots don’t have teeth suitable for chewing, so they tend to chop their food into pieces and swallow it whole.
The ocelot in the image has been nicknamed “SANSA”.
Its short, silky fur features dark spots and elongated rosettes on a golden or yellowish background. No two ocelots are alike! Each pattern is unique, just like a fingerprint.
They are nocturnal animals, which means they prefer to go out and hunt at night. During the day, they rest in trees or hidden among the vegetation.
They live alone and fiercely defend their territory.
Ocelots are very intelligent, curious, and quick learners. In captivity, they require constant enrichment to stay mentally stimulated.
Did you know…?
In some Amazonian cultures, the ocelot is considered a guardian spirit of the forest.
Its name comes from the Nahuatl word “ōcēlōtl”, which originally referred to the jaguar.
