Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco)
General characteristics:
Size: It is the largest of all toucan species, measuring between 55 and 65 cm.
Beak: Its most distinctive feature is its large orange beak, which can reach up to 20 cm—almost a third of its body length. Although it looks heavy, it is very light due to its hollow bone structure.
Colors: Its body is black with a white throat and a blue ring around the eyes. The contrast with the beak makes it extremely eye-catching.
Habitat Y Diet
It is found in tropical forests, savannas, and open areas of South America, especially in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Unlike other toucans that prefer dense jungle, the Toco Toucan also adapts well to more open regions.
It is frugivorous, meaning its diet is mainly based on fruit. However, it can also eat insects, eggs of other birds, and even small reptiles when it needs more protein.
Its beak
Although its beak looks heavy, it is actually light and strong, as it is made of keratin with a hollow structure.
The toucan uses it to reach fruit on thin branches where its body cannot support itself.
It also helps regulate its body temperature by releasing excess heat when necessary.
Behaviour
Toco toucans are monogamous, meaning they have only one partner throughout their lives.
They use their beaks to play and socialize with other toucans.
Unlike many other birds, they don’t build nests—instead, they make use of natural holes in trees.
Their chicks are born featherless and with a very small beak, which grows as they mature.
Fun facts
Its striking appearance has made it one of the most popular birds in pop culture and advertising. It’s even the mascot of a famous breakfast cereal brand!
